WHISTLER SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY SPEAKER SERIES
On Monday, February 5 at 7pm at the Whistler Secondary School, the Whistler Social Sustainability Speaker Series will be hosting Darren Wilk, a certified Gottman therapist from the renowned Gottman Institute in Seattle. In this lively and often humourous presentation, Wilk will be sharing the seven principles developed by Dr. John Gottman to help guide couples on the path towards harmonious and long-lasting relationships.
Based on over an extensive 35 years of research with more than 3000 couples, Wilk will present fresh insights and research-based communication tools that can dramatically improve relationships. Dr. Gottman is confident that he can predict with a ninety percent accuracy rate whether a couple will divorce simply after one interview. The seven tips from Dr. Gottman’s New York Times best selling book The Seven Principles that Make Marriages Work are straightforward, easy to set into practice, and the effects are profound. For those with strong relationships the presentation will offer tools that can help make it a great one, and for those with distressed relationships, it will help provide a road map for repair.
Everyone is invited to attend the talk and all of the Whistler Social Sustainability Speaker Series events are free of charge. Childcare will be available at the same time.
The Whistler Social Sustainability Speaker Series, generously supported by the Resort Municipality of Whistler, the Howe Sound School District, and the Westin Whistler Resort & Spa, is led by a group of Whistler-based volunteers committed to promoting and supporting a healthy lifestyle and wellness through mental, physical, social and spiritual health. Door prizes for the event kindly provided by Rogers Chocolates, The Love Nest and Senka Florist.

WHISTLER FAMILY DAYS - Skyline Tour
Family Days Encourage Healthy Development
Whistler families will receive a 30% discount on all activities at Skyline on Feb 11th. Families can book ahead and just need to ask for the local family discount.
Whistler For Youth’s Drug & Alcohol Committee is proud to present Whistler Family Days, a series of monthly family activities designed to build connectedness among family members in order to increase communication and protective factors around drugs and alcohol.
Getting involved in positive activities encourages healthy development and helps children make positive choices and avoid high-risk behaviours such as alcohol use. Involvement in school, sports, community, creative arts, and spiritual activities all have positive benefits for children, including ongoing connections to caring, responsible adults and peers; balanced growth in body, mind and spirit; challenges to grow, learn and contribute; safe, structured places to spend time; and opportunities to learn more about themselves and the world.
The Drug & Alcohol Committee is a non-profit group in operation for 12 years, which has recently joined Whistler for Youth. The Committee is made up of representatives from Health Services, Community Services, Youth/Young Adult Programs, Parents, and Interested Citizens. We work together to organize and support events that educate youth and families on alcohol and drugs as well as strengthen family ties.
Whistler Family Days will run one Wednesday per month from December 2006 to April 2007. The special discount is available to participating local families. Upcoming events include Sleigh Rides with Outdoor Adventures Whistler, and Rock Climbing at the Core. The Drug & Alcohol Committee appreciates the support they have received from local activity providers, and the opportunities they are providing for families to spend quality time together.
