Visit the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre for all our family
activities, purchase a family pass, which allows you and your
family to revisit the centre as often as you like for a whole year.
Visit our Salish Workshop and make your own mini drums, paddle
necklaces, cedar bracelets and much more!
The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre in Whistler is an authentic
Aboriginal Museum and Cultural experience. Engage in crafts, tours
and cultural activities for the whole family. The Centre showcases
the history, art and heritage of the Squamish and Lil'wat First
Nations through drumming performances, guided tours of the museum,
interactive, contemporary and outdoor exhibits, craft workshops and
a spectacular 15-minute film.
The Centre is located across from the Fairmont Chateau Whistler
Resort in the upper village. Try a variety of indigenous inspired
fares in our Café such as our traditional bannock or visit our Gift
Shop for authentic Native art.
Mondays are admission by donation.
WHAT YOU CAN DO AT THE CENTRE
Tour the building: Self-guided or group tours are
available. Group tours are hosted by professional Squamish and
Lil'wat guides, providing a cultural context for the history, arts,
and culture on display at the Centre.
View a multimedia film: A 12-minute film runs
every 20 minutes in the 80-seat theatre.
Witness artists working: Artist-in-residence
programs feature Salish weaving, heritage canoe carving, and cedar
basket weaving.
Explore nature: The Cultural Forest Walk is a
nature loop alive with indigenous plants with descriptive
signage.
Outdoor Exhibits: Explore the traditional Istken
and engage in the Salish Workshop crafts set up in the
Longhouse.
Eat at the Café: Taste indigenous food. Take your
taste buds on a journey of discovery - savor the flavor of the
Nations.
Visit the Giftshop: Purchase cedar baskets, wool
weavings, jewelry, carved masks - created by Squamish, Lil'wat, and
other First Nations artists.
NEW EXHIBITS
Salish Carvings- Wednesdays to Fridays
Visit Squamish and Lil'wat carvers as they start to work
on a new large carving piece. You are invited to check out the work
in progress, ask questions, and learn more about the story that
inspired this piece. Other works by Ray Natraoro have include
the Xaays canoe (40 foot ocean going canoe!) that
travelled the west coast this summer as part of canoe journey
activities.
Children's Activity Centre
Located at the end of the Great Hall is our Children's activity
zone. Perfect for all ages, guest can loose themselves in their
imaginations: play a drum, try on authentic aboriginal regalia,
read books and try a craft -- Watch out for the cougar and
bear!
The Squamish Community: Our People and Places Archival
Photography and Art Exhibit
A stunning collection of archival photography organizedby the
Squamish Nation Education department guided by Squamish elders in
collaboration with the North Vancouver Museum and Archives. This
unique format identifies the people and places within each
photo.
